Chocolate and Celery

Two of my favorite colours together! I had been meaning to try out one of these cards for quite some time. They have the side fold, but the front has been rounded and is shorter than the back. You keep it tied shut with some ribbon. Since this was my prototype, I didn't do anything too extravagant. I was just happy that it worked!

I ran the card base through the cuttlebug using the largest oval from Petite Ovals. I then ran the chocolate piece through using the same die, and then I ran the celery piece using the coordinating scalloped die. I adhered the celery piece first, then placed the chocolate piece over top, so that the interior is still all white. I found some matching ribbon, then die cut another oval and scalloped mat, stamped a branch and sentiment from Out on a Limb, and that was that! The oval is mounted up on strategically placed pop dots, so that the ribbon can easily be pulled under and through.

Butterflies!

I was so busy yesterday, stamping up a storm, that I didn't even realize until today that I had nothing to show for it! (At least not yet...) So today, I decreed, was a stamping for me day. It's not like I didn't enjoy myself yesterday, but sometimes, you just need do something for the pure enjoyment. No commitments, no challenges, just back to the basics- what sucked you into stamping in the first place. You know?

I finally got my hands on Wonderful Wings. It's such a gorgeous set and I really like watercolouring the butterflies with twinkling H2Os. I started with one butterfly, then sketched out a layout, which then brought to my attention that I needed to do a second butterfly. I used textured cardstock for the base and for the white panel. I think sometimes a little bit of texture is all you need to bring that visual WOW forward.

Sometimes...

You just need a bit of inspiration before starting a project. I happened to be checking out Julie's blog this morning, and took a peek inside the "miscellaneous designs". I saw this beauty from a little while back, and was hit with the inspired bug!

I don't have any vellum cardstock, so I improvised. I took a piece of vellum, folded it in half, then trimmed off most of the back. I attached that to a piece of vanilla cardstock. It worked wonderfully and is quite stable. For some reason, this particular project just wasn't photographing nicely, but it is quite pretty in person! The petal prints are stamped on vanilla. I mixed banana and apricot on the flowers themselves to get a nice gradient look going. I added in a bit of speckles around the image, and finished it off with some awesome ribbon from A Muse. The vellum piece is stamped with white craft ink. I always love the look of the script in white on vellum. It's so soft and pretty, especially with those other Soft Subtles colours. One other thing I did, was add a touch of glitter to the flowers with a Spica Clear pen. It's subtle, but nice.

New Verve!!

Today is the release day for four new sets at Verve Visual! This card features one of the new sets, Asian Flair. As soon as I saw this set, I knew I needed to make a card using red, black, and gold. I did some polished stone using those colours, it's quite a pretty result! Next I stamped the squares, cut those out, then embossed the circles in gold, and popped those out with a 3/4'' circle punch. The card base is textured white paper. I added the sentiment in black on the red, then added in some black ribbon and gold cord. Here's another shot of the card in its entirety. The one reinker I used ended up going a bit purple when I mixed it with the alcohol. So afterwards, I used a bit of black stazon reinker so that black would still be present in the polished stone.

A challenge card or two...

I keep meaning to participate in the Hero Arts weekly challenges, I just never got around to it. Finally, I set some time aside yesterday evening and got to work. It took a lot longer than I expected, I kept changing the stamp that I wanted to use in two different ways. I started with a sentiment stamp, made a card, but then didn't like how the second one was coming about. So I decided to go with flowers instead!

Here's my first card. I kept things relatively simple on this one. I stamped the iris first, then the other two. My stamp of choice for this challenge was the tulip stamp. I coloured in a little garden scene, using Copics, graphic artist markers, and even a prismacolor marker (no brand loyalty to markers here). I decided to break out two severely underused colours for my card. I did a Glorious Green mat and an Orchid Opulence card base. I was surprised by how much I liked them together.

For my second card, it was easiest to stick with the floral theme. However, I wanted to change things up. I used only the petals of the tulips to make a new flower. There are 3 tulips on this stamp, so there was the possibility to create 3 different flower looks. I coloured those in with markers, and added a touch of glitter with a gold Spica marker. I also added in some gelly gems to bring more sparkle to each flower. I used the same sentiment, but this time, I put it on a tab.

Robot Birthday!

So, my sister needed me to make a card for one of her friends. And for the birthday, they are going to go see Wall*E, the new Disney/Pixar movie. She requested that I use a robot on the card. I happily obliged! I started out with a vague sketch in mind. I stamped the robot on white cardstock, ran it through the cuttlebug, then stamped the sentiment. Next up came the colouring. I couldn't resist picking up a pack of Koh-i-noor Woodless Colour Pencils. They are marvelous. The coverage you get and the blending, well I'm sure you've all heard it already, but they really are that good! I coloured the robot with shades of green, and added a bit of sparkle with some Spicas. I thought about finding some good paper to match a robot theme, but I'm pretty sure I don't have any. Instead, I went with embossing this fun circle background. I figured that seemed fun and whimsy in the robot kind of way.

Another Dirty Challenge!

It's the 20th, you know what that means! It's time for another dirty challenge.

The guidelines: Challenge Focus: "Inside & Out"......stamp and decorate both the inside of your card AND the outside of the envelope. (any card size is ok)

Required Element: Patriotic element - interpret this any way you like (ex. color scheme, sentiment, image, whatever)

Restricted Element: No ribbon

For my card, I went with red and white for my patriotic element. I recently picked up a pack of the metal rimmed circular tags, and I really wanted to use one, so I incorporated that into the card. For the interior of the card and the envelope I went with a stamped "swoosh" type pattern of the stars.

A New Sketch Book

Well, I decided over the weekend that I wanted a Bind It All. I've always been keen on making books, and this was a tool that was designed for exactly that activity. I ordered from Paper Works Co. on Sunday and received it today. The joys of ordering from within your own country: it got here FAST, and no extra fees. :D Peggy provides amazing customer service and she's constantly adding new items to her online store. I just thought I'd give a shout out to her before showing my first BIA project.

I had picked up some graph paper earlier today because I knew exactly what I wanted my first project to be- a sketches book. I have a nice notebook I currently use, however, it has so many pages and its spine is too tight. The book never stays open on my desk, and I have to really force it open while I'm writing or drawing in it. A coil bound book can easily stand on my desk. This was my very first project, and I have to say, I was surprised at how easy it all came together. Even though I had already bought the tool, I didn't believe it could really be as easy as they advertised it to be! I figured my first project would an awkward proto-type. Not so!

To the left is a close up of my letters. I used the License Plate Letters set. I stamped them on white cardstock, then I mixed together 4 different colours of embossing powder (teal, blue, lime, and orange). The result was a fun speckled look! Since I had used that font, I thought I might as well add some other traffic themed images. I stamped a sign, as well as two license plates, using the mini license plate alphabet to add in the words "Inspire" and "Create". The covers of the book were made with some chipboard I had lying around. I think it was actually the backing off of a pad of paper. It worked well, since it was thin enough to be cut with my paper cutter.

Since I even looked at a sketch challenge. Now I know the purpose of the challenges are to try something new, but when I saw that today's sketch was one of my favorites, I couldn't resist! I even staged my photo like Kristina, the one who inspired this sketch. I know, I can be cheesy like that.

How sweet!

I just picked up some fun papers yesterday- Winnie's Walls by sei. After looking at them more closely, it became apparent how well they matched Stampin' Up's wasabi, groovy guava, ruby red, and river rock, as well as PaperTrey Ink's Berry Sorbet. It's just always nice when you purchase another manufacturer's papers and it goes so well with what you already own!

I've started another Kraft paper kick recently. I just love it as a card base instead of white. For this card, I slapped on a strip of the striped Winnie's Wall paper, added some pierced lines on either side. A slight oops in my piercing dictated the layout. Not a problem, nothing a rectangle nestability cut out couldn't hide. The cherries were stamped then covered with Spica markers for that extra glittery, sugary glow.

Happy Father's Day!

This is the card I made for my dad for father's day. He just so happened to buy himself a new tv, so it seemed appropriate to use this tv image. I like the retro feeling of that stamp, so I paired it with black, grey, and white, as well as the Linograph background and some corner rounding. The greeting was put together using a Verve Visual stamp and a Papertrey Ink stamp.

A little bit of verve...

I kept meaning to make a project for this month's Verve Product Parade a bit earlier. Finally, today I did exactly that. I used the colours and the general vibe I got from the photo as my inspiration. I started with some River Rock coloured patterned paper, then set about figuring out a layout. Next I pulled out Fancy Filigree and realized that this set had more looks than I had previously thought. The way the filigrees are designed makes it a snap to stamp them than turn 45 degrees to make an even cooler design. I really like the result! I added a small gem to the interior of each filigree, matted those on a square, attached them to the strip of River Rock, then stamped a saying.

Here's another fun card using some Doodle Factory images. For this one, I started with the main image, chose my patterned paper (aka my colour palette), then built my card around it. I coloured in the image with pencil crayons. I thought this image would look fun flying over a round card. It kind of has a Globe feel to me.

Prince Charming?

Well, after reorganizing (completely!) my craft space yesterday, I finally had some time to sit down and use the newly cleaned space. It's amazing what that can do for your creativity. For this card, I pulled out the Doodle Factory Fairy Tale set again, and got to work. I stamped the frog, crown, and mushroom, then coloured it in with Copic markers. I was in the mood for something really vibrant, and I couldn't be happier with it's cheerfulness! Once I had the frog all done, I decided on a layout. Next, I found this argyle paper, I thought it worked well with the whole quasi-royalty theme. I added a sentiment from one of the Cat's Pajama's valentine sets, and then added some saddlestitched ribbon to bring it all together nicely.

Magic!

I absolutely love this Fairy Tale set by Doodle Factory, but I've barely had a chance to use it! My sister requested a birthday card for a friend of hers. Wizards popped into my mind when I thought of the friend. So I had to use Earwick the Wise for her birthday card. I was feeling a bit bummed, because I really wanted a very specific phrase to pair with the wizard. Alas, I didn't have any stamps that said such things. But wait! I totally forgot that I owned some snap stamps. They really are perfect for those out of the norm phrases. I added a few stars to the background, and that was that! I coloured this one with pencil crayons for his staff, skin, and robe, and with markers for his shoes and beard.

My heart is with you

I am still LOVING this Black Orchid paper pack from SEI. I don't quite have the the right ink match for it, but Papertrey Ink's Berry Sorbet was a somewhat close match. I made my card base with textured brown paper, added the twill ribbon to the patterned paper, did a bit of stamping, then pieced it all together.

Fluttering By Gift Set

Here's another project I made for Verve Visual's May release. This set features the Fluttering By set. I started off by making a little box out of acetate to hold the cards. I stamped that with a polka-dotted circle stamp and white stazon. Then I added eyelets and a ribbon handle. Next I made 4 cards to go in the box-bag. I chose a single type of patterned paper, white and berry sorbet cardstock, coral ribbon, square nestabilities, and white embossing powder and got started on creating 4 different layouts. I had jotted down a few sketches to follow along, and for the most part I stuck to them. One thing that I thought was kind of fun was how I did the coloured wing part of the butterflies. Instead of colouring it in, I stamped the butterfly on the coloured cardstock, then cut that out. The cutting job didn't even need to be that precise, because I had also stamped the butterfly on the white square. I was kind of surprised by how much I liked the bright coral, white, and black colour combo.

Woo, It's June 1st!

I've been waiting for this day for a while! I can finally share some of the fun Verve samples I've worked on! You can check out this post if you would like to read a little bit about me and see all the samples. I thought I would share my projects by set from this most recent release.

Today I have a Fancy Filigree card to show. As soon as I saw this set, I knew I had to make some gorgeous background paper with the images. I stamped one of the filigree images in a few different colours, overlapping them for a cool effect. After I had that all done, I thought it'd look quite pretty to place a larger filigree overtop. I stamped one and cut it out. I looked through my stash of stuff and found these half pearls. They were the perfect size for the circle of the bigger filigree! The entire card is made of shimmery white and it is quite the sparkling creation!

The Beauty of Dreams

Egads, have you all seen Verve Visual's May release??? I LOVE it all. Here's a quick card featuring the Floral Whimsy set. I modified the sentiment a bit. I thought this one worked nicely as well- Believe in the Beauty of Dreams. The original quote is "the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams". If you're wondering how I omitted the other words... I didn't use a marker. Instead I stamped the phrase on an eclipse masking sheet. Then I cut out the words I planned to use, keeping the rest of the phrase connected. I placed that on my paper, then stamped away. Voila, a new quote! I also had fun making the pattern vase. I used two stampin' spots, inking up the middle with orange, than added the pink along the ends, as well as pink stripes on the orange. The small shadow under the vase was added by a grey alcohol marker.

What's up!

Here's another scene card with some Doodle Factory images. I thought about having this particular critter spray painting a wall, but a mailbox seemed more appropriate. I stamped the critter and the mailbox first. Next I masked them, and brayered the grey wall, then the ground as well. The images were coloured in with a mix of markers, reinkers, aquabrush, and blender pens. I really wanted some sort of graffiti message, but I went with hand drawn block letters instead. I'm not very good at making tags.

A Little Something!

Hello! Thanks for the comments and feedback so far for the Clean & Simple Stamping blog! I appreciate it!

I know this next card definitely fits into that style, but I wanted to share a little Stampin' Up!. It's always nice to go back to where you started. I did use one non Stampin' Up product on here- that would be the scented embossing powder. No, I haven't yet found an apple scented powder. However, I figured cherry would work just as nicely. The important thing is it's red and it smells fruity.

Something new...

So, I have had this idea kicking around in my head for a while... I thought it'd be fun to have a specific location for those "Clean and Simple" type cards. I thought it'd be a great place to showcase examples of this stamping style, as well as tips and ideal techniques.

Blast from the not-so-distant past

Well, I am busy working on things that must go unshown for a week or two, so I thought it'd be fun to show one of my very favorite Dirty Dozen designs. This one was done for a sketch challenge. It features Lizzie Anne Designs-Au Naturale Stamps, and Twinkling H2Os. It's just one of those cards that I fell in love with. I actually chose to part with it, but I know the recipient hangs on to stuff like that, so I was okay to let it go.

Flourishes Magnolias

Today's card started out with an idea I had while trying to sleep last night. Isn't that great, even when you're trying to fall asleep, these creative ideas just pop into your head? The idea was to do a bit of paper tole with these magnolias. I ended up just doing one popped up layer, but the effect is still noticeable. Using the branch stamp, the 2 different magnolia images, and the leaf, I put together a glimpse of a magnolia tree. I stamped, cut out, coloured, and attached the flowers one layer up. I also applied a layer of Pure Mica Metallic Luster to give the blossoms more shine. The card base comes from the Basic Grey Sugared 6x6 paper pad. The angled twist to a fall-to layout came from an oops at the paper cutter (while I was cutting a different paper, some chocolate chip cardstock was underneath).

Here's another card that I made a week or so back. Once again, I felt the need to use some of my new designer paper. This time, it was a piece from the Summer Picnic collection that inspired the rest of the card. I started with the dotted paper, then looked through my stamps and decided to continue with the dot theme. I chose the boots from PTI's Green Thumb. I stamped one on the actual panel, and stamped and cut out the other one.

I've just felt a tiny bit swampled lately, not in a bad way either, just not having much time to do creative things. Over the next few days I should have the chance to catch up though! I should have a number of fun things to share.

Gems and Flowers

Here's a quick card I made a few days back. I had just received the East Coast Prep papers, and wanted to use them. I pulled the colours from this striped piece and based my card on that. For this card, I actually pieced together everything else before the main panel. I tend to make the main panel too big, then my ribbon has to go too far to the right or left. So this time, I got the placement of that, then decided on a panel size. Finally, only at that point, I decided on what I would even put on the panel. I made it a birthday card, because I can always use more of those.

Oh my goodness, do I ever love this new floral set from Flourishes! I was about to stamp this image on some white paper, but then I recalled how lovely vanilla is. I stamped it on vanilla, coloured it in with markers, reinkers, and blender pens. Next, I used some Eclipse masking tape to mask the image. I stamped a script background over top, then sponged all around the edges of the panel, and of the flower. I was just in the mood for a really worn look for this card- lots of sponging, lots of distressing. I really love how it turned out!

Rock a bye baby

Today, I've got a sneak peak at one of the new Flourishes sets being released this week. This one is called Rock a Bye Baby, and it has some absolutely darling images in it. For my card, I stamped the image, then coloured it with copic markers. I wanted the moon to really twinkle, so after I coloured it with markers, I added just a touch of twinkling H2os, yellow rose specifically. The card is a big format, 5.5x5.5. I cut the main image out with some oval nestabilities, then reshaped the sentiment so that it would follow the shape of the oval. I added some faux stitching to the card base, and some ribbon, and it was all done!

Monday Blues

The other evening, I sat down to make something, anything. My sister insisted I make her a card, her 2 requirements: Use one of the robots from Doodle Factory's Urban release, and use blues. I could handle that. I had just received my Great Expectations sentiments from Verve Visual, so I also wanted to bring in one of those sentiments. I started with the robot. I stamped him, then set about watercolouring him with blues. I thought he kind of looked a bit pouty (especially being blue now), so I went through the sentiments and found "Don't forget me when you're rich and famous". It fit quite nicely with his face and body language. The background turquoise seemed too plain, so I stamped the Crosshatch background on it and highlighted connecting lines with a white gel pen. My sister was quite pleased with the end result of her "challenge".

Happy Mother's Day!

Well, I have to say, this weekend kind of snuck up on me. I had it in my head that next week was Mother's Day. At least I was set straight before today! I had 3 cards to make. I thought about being boring and making 3 that were at least the same layout, but I just couldn't do it. Each one was specifically made for the recipient.

The first one is for my mom. I wanted something cheerful, a bit summery and fun. Plus, I wanted to try out Beate's weekend sketch. This one actually has very minimal stamping, but it was still a bit of work with the all the cutting. I used some of the Summer Picnic papers for my flowers. The small flowers are all from one piece, and the larger flowers are from a different piece. I really like the look of the red, bashful, and olive with a kraft base. Inside the card it says "You're Amazing", because my mom is pretty amazing!

Next up, this one started out because of a certain trip to Michaels on Friday... I have a soft spot for SEI papers, and they had paper pads on sale. This one is from Black Orchid. It's a fun mixture of celery, black, white, coral, and aqua. I looked through my floral stamps and found that these ones from PaperTrey's Beautiful Blooms were the best match. This card if for one of my grandmothers. She's got a bright, personality, and the coral reminded me of her.

For my other grandmother, the first thing that came to mind was roses. She has the entire Country Roses china collection, and likes rose scents, and of course the actual live flowers too. So I had to use Kitchen Sink Stamps 3-Step Roses. I thought about doing the pink-red of the Country Roses china, but I thought yellow would be a nice choice too. I used So Saffron and More Mustard for the roses, and Celery, Wasabi, and Garden Green for the Leaves. This mother's day sentiment comes from one of the retired All Year Cheers. I wanted a bit of something one the saffron background, so I stamped some French Script.

Tart & Tangy Treats

I know it's been quite some time since I posted anything with Stampin' Up! product. It's not that I don't still love their stuff, but I just feel like I haven't had much time for stamping lately, and I have all this other stuff on my desk. So, what changed? Well I finally put in an order for some stuff from the Occasions mini. I cannot get enough of fruity stamps. I love them all, I wish there were more! So when I saw Tart & Tangy and the matching paper I had to have them both. First off is a small 3x3 note card. I'm not sure what I was thinking with putting the phrase where I did, but what's done is done. It's clearly unbalanced, and the one eyelet is way too close to the word "crazy". But you know what, the cheerfulness of the green and orange are just too cute for me to fret too much about the rest of it being perfection.



For my second card with this set, I went with a sketch I had jotted down from who knows where. I stamped the citrus stamp three times on a white panel. I did a lime, an orange, and a lemon. Then I proceeded to make the rest of the card those colours. I used some paper from Summer Picnic once again. I also double matted the fruity panel, then when that was all set up, I used the now retired envelope glue stick (it makes nice circles) and daubed some on each fruit. I have this thicker style glitter that totally looks like sugar, so that went over the citrus fruits. I wanted a little sentiment, and the word delightful seemed very appropriate.



Now, I've used some summer colours, I would like to feel some summer weather! As of now, my hands are popsicles since we don't want to turn the heat back on!

The Berry Best!

Here's a quick and simple card featuring just a touch of stamping and a touch of patterned paper. I knew I wanted to use these strawberries, so I looked through my paper stash to find anything that would match decently. This paper is by Scenic Route, it's Rockland/Perry Street. I thought about just putting a touch of the paper on the bottom or top, but after I had some there, I realized that it would look good in both locations! Next, I added some Real Red grosgrain, I cannot get enough of that ribbon, I'm sure glad I still have at least 25 yards of it! I added the sentiment, then went about placing the strawberries. I hemmed and hawed as to where they should go, but I'm happy with the final placement. I popped one small one (by the sentiment) and the large one up with pop dots, since I didn't want them just flat on the card.

Just Because

How lovely is this Basic Grey paper? This piece inspired my entire card. I chose my green (True Thyme) based on the colours in it. I stamped a topiary from Flourishes Siberian Iris set, then watercoloured that with the True Thyme ink, and some Chocolate Chip. Next, I added cut it out and embossed it with nestabilities, added it on a scalloped Thyme mat, and then added in some chocolate flourishes. The stamps, nestabilities, paper pad, and ribbon are all available from Flourishes.

Some Paisley!

I made this card some time last week, but I forgot to upload it. I chose a colour palette, and wanted some images that would best showcase that palette. So I went with the Build Your Own Paisley set from gel-a-tins. I love having the paisley pieces separate. It really eases the process for multi-coloured shapes!

A Little More Country

I just can't get enough of these Doodle Factory Country critters! I really do like colouring, but all too often, I find myself using bold, solid images on my cards. This card, however, itis completely different from that style. I wanted to include both the barn image and the house image in a scene card, so I started with a base 8 inches wide. I coloured in the background with markers, then cut out a few other characters and items for the foreground part of the scene. I have no idea what I would ever use this card for, but it sure was fun to piece together. Whenever I see these Doodle Factory characters, I feel like they should illustrate a children's story of something.

Happy Hello from the Farm

I've been having more fun with the Doodle Factory images this weekend. For my first card, I went with a smaller format. Its dimensions are 3.75x5. Part of the reason for this was so I could use my mini check background stamp with ease. The card itself uses no special techniques, just your basic stamping and pencil crayon colouring. The ribbon on there comes from A Muse. I thought these chickens seemed like they'd be chirping a greeting.

On my second card, I wanted some dimension. I stamped the fence first on some cardstock. Then I went about making a mask using some post-it notes. I only have the small ones, so I had to tape 2 together. I stamped the cow, but I wanted it to be looking over the fence. So I stamped just the head on another piece of paper, coloured, and cut that out. I coloured everything else, then applied the cow head onto the image with pop dots. The card base is covered with various sized black circle punch outs. You can't really see the dimension that well on the full card photo, so here's a close-up.

I thought that these two critters from Doodle Factory Country seemed like they should be jumping for joy. I stamped the animals with Versafine ink, then watercoloured them using markers, reinkers, and an aquapainter. The sentiment comes from the Sun Spirit Studio Thanks set .
